Compensation and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience. The University supplements major medical insurance. A 403b retirement plan is available for eligible employees to contribute pre-tax dollars with Belhaven University matching up to 8% of annual salary.
BELHAVEN UNIVERSITY
Belhaven University, a vibrant Christ-centered academic community committed to the ministry of integrating faith and learning, is searching for the ideal candidate for a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor of Dance to begin in August 2023. The mission of the Dance Department is to prepare students technically, artistically, academically, and spiritually to move into the world of dance and affiliated careers in adherence with the mission of the university. Degrees offered include a Master of Fine Arts (MFA), Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), Bachelor of Arts (BA), and a Dance Minor. Belhaven’s dance program provides rigorous technical training, innovative performance opportunities, individualized mentorship, and focused career preparation with particular attention to the integration of faith and learning. This thriving program serves a large number of dance majors and minors on a small campus located in the heart of the capital city.
Responsibilities
The Belhaven University Dance faculty is dedicated to offering students opportunities to gain in-depth knowledge and practice in the field of dance within a Christ-centered environment. The Assistant/Associate Professor of Dance will:
Model an active Christian faith and inspire students to pursue excellence as dancers and scholars
Teach studio technique courses in ballet technique; successful candidates will have significant experience teaching classical variations, pas de deux, pointe and/or contemporary partnering; the hiring committee is also interested to learn about applicants’ other areas of technical expertise such as jazz, tap, hip hop, contemporary dance, or global dance forms
Teach 1-2 dance theory or studio/lab undergraduate and/or graduate courses per semester such as pedagogy, ballet teaching methods, kinesiology, production, conditioning, choreography, research and writing, dance and technology, or somatics
Choreograph and/or direct rehearsals for the Belhaven University Dance Ensemble and/or Dance Ministry Ensemble concerts as well as assist with coordinating dance productions and performances on and off campus
Supervise student choreography and capstone projects
Advise undergraduate students toward degree completion and preparation for careers
Assist with recruitment for the Dance Department and administrative duties as assigned
MFA in Dance is preferred; ideal candidates will have a record of success in higher education and a national and/or international professional reputation as a performer, choreographer, or dance scholar. Applicants should provide evidence of effective collaboration with colleagues.
