Description:
Houghton University invites applications for a one-year visiting position in European History at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor. The hire will teach in our Humanities general education sequence as well as in the History major. The fall course offerings include two sections of HUM 101: Enduring Questions: The Ancient and Medieval Worlds, which includes a heavy focus on classics; a section of World History, 1500-Present; and a to-be-determined elective in European history. Spring offerings will include two or possibly three sections of HUM 102: Enduring Questions: The Early Modern World and either one or two to-be-determined history electives. We expect to run a search for a tenure-track position in 2023-24.
The Humanities general education sequence is a distinctive of Houghton’s curriculum to which all Humanities faculty are expected to contribute. A sequence of three courses in chronological sequence, its integrative curriculum includes instruction primarily in history, literature, and philosophy, and it follows a modified Great Books approach with a focus on primary texts.
Review of applications will begin on April 14 and will continue until the position is filled. This is a full-time position with all associated benefits. Relocation and housing assistance available for those relocating to Houghton from outside the region.
No committee or advising responsibilities are attached to this one-year position. The faculty member shall contribute fully to the work of the department through participation in student events, admission efforts, faculty and department meetings, and campus Spiritual Life.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in History, preferably with a specialty in European history. We will consider exceptionally qualified candidates who are ABD.
Also required is ability to help students form respectful attitudes and interactions with people who differ in abilities, attitudes, and cultural experience, with sensitivity to factors that affect our own assessment of others.
Other important qualities for this position include a commitment to excellence and creativity in undergraduate teaching, a mature Christian faith, and an ability to integrate Christian faith into their teaching.
