This position provides the instruction and support necessary for the delivery of the visual arts curriculum offered by the university. The position helps the university adhere to established industry standards in the study of the visual arts, including the studio arts with courses in two-dimensional studies and three-dimensional studies; graphic design; and art education.
Essential Job Duties
Perform a minimum workload of 24 total credits per academic year
Assist in the evaluation and development of curricula
Regularly assess, provide feedback, and maintain records of student work and abilities
Advise students in academic and career pursuits
Serve on committees and in other support roles as assigned
Maintain office hours as expected
Attend faculty meetings
Attend department-sponsored events, including events not directly related to assigned workload and frequent evening events
Prepare, be punctual and maintain regular attendance for assigned duties and expectations
Participate in academic events and wear academic regalia as required
Participate in recruitment activities, including occasional after-hours, occasional Saturdays, and occasional travel off-campus
Comply with university guidelines regarding faculty duties and requirements
Set an example of Christian lifestyle for all constituents
Demonstrate a commitment and adherence to the SBU Principles and Expectations
Perform other duties as assigned

Position Requirements
Required
A terminal degree in the visual arts (i.e., Master of Fine Arts in studio art, graphic design or other visual arts related discipline) from a regionally accredited university. PhD in visual art related discipline (art history or art theory/philosophy with appropriate number of graduate hours in studio arts or graphic design) may be considered
Advanced skill in appropriate visual arts discipline (i.e., ceramics, painting, graphic design, installation, video, art theory/philosophy/theology, etc.)
Demonstrated ability to teach and model professionalism and collegiality in all aspects of content, communication and collaboration
Professing Christian with an active commitment to the local church
Preferred
Master of Fine Arts in a visual arts discipline from a regionally accredited university.
Minimum of 3 years prior teaching experience
Active membership and participation in appropriate professional organizations
Commitment to ongoing research and scholarly growth as demonstrated through any of the following: studio and/or professional practice, professional coursework, or scholarly publications.
Work Environment
Classroom, studio, and various exhibition venues with studio related equipment and tools, including occasional exposure to high decibel levels of sound
Interaction with individual students in close proximity for diagnosis, demonstration and correction of physical aspects associated with art instruction
Physical Abilities
Frequently educates students in a classroom, studio, or exhibition venue and is able to communicate accurate information and ideas in these situations
Frequently demonstrates acute and precise discernment of all visual aspects of art
Occasionally works with equipment, moves equipment, and prepares areas for students to function and learn in a safe and productive environment
