The Lee University School of Music seeks a highly qualified conductor and string player for the position of Orchestra Director and Assistant Professor of Strings. The position is a full-time tenure-track faculty role beginning August 2025. The ideal candidate will have a record of success as an orchestral conductor and string player, with a passion for undergraduate education, and an aptitude for building and maintaining a strings program. In addition to developing and overseeing a strong orchestra and strings program, this individual will be expected to teach applied lessons in violin or some other string instrument. An ability to contribute to other areas of instruction will also be considered. Community outreach and student recruitment are major components of this position, and this faculty member will be expected to build a strong reputation and visible presence in the community.
Duties
Responsibilities include directing the orchestra and an additional string ensemble as needed, teaching applied lessons in violin or some other string instrument, teaching applied lessons or classes in conducting at the undergraduate and graduate level, and a reasonable share of advising, committee service, or other ordinary faculty service. A strong emphasis is placed on program development and recruiting, as well as community engagement. This individual will be expected to design and implement effective means of recruiting for the string program.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a terminal degree in conducting, or performance, or commensurate experience. Evidence of success as an orchestral conductor and string player is required, as well as experience teaching applied lessons. Demonstrated success in program building will be one criteria of evaluation.
