The Assistant Professor of Elementary Education is a full-time position, responsible to provide excellence in teaching through the fulfillment of the mission and strategic goals of the School of Education. This is an onsite, in person teaching position that is promotable and eligible for extended contract. Essential responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Provide teaching and leadership for the Elementary Education teacher licensure program leading to licensure in the field of Elementary Education Grades K–6.
Teach undergraduate courses in Elementary undergraduate teacher licensure program in areas such as curriculum, assessment, and reading and language arts methods.
Teach other courses in Education commensurate with departmental needs and individual expertise.
Provide supervision of teacher education candidates.
Serve as the Elementary Education program coordinator by providing leadership in the areas of curriculum, admission and retention of students, advising, budget planning, adjunct faculty recruitment and retention, program development, and assessment.
Assist the Director of Field Experience in developing cooperating school partnerships in support of the Elementary Education program.
Collaborate with faculty in curriculum and course development, including course and program assessment, for undergraduate teacher licensure programs.
Advise students as assigned.
Engage students during office hours.
Participate in the ongoing work of faculty by serving on committees, assisting with the recruitment and retention of students, and connecting with alumni.
Fulfill assigned departmental duties, attend department/faculty meetings, convocation, commencement, and other functions as requested by Administration.
Actively participate in professional organizations as able.

Secondary job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Assist with the ongoing evaluation and development of Education programs.
Develop positive relationships with teachers and administrators in area schools.
Help with miscellaneous department duties as requested.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Terminal degree in Education, required
Minimum of three (3) years of successful Elementary teaching at the K–6 level, required
Professional preparation for elementary education through an accredited or state-approved program, required
Advanced preparation in the teaching of reading preferred
An established record of professional/scholarly/creative activities in Elementary Education, preferred
Experience in supervising student teachers or teacher licensure candidates, preferred
Experience with the national edTPA assessment for student teachers, preferred
Continually nurture a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; serve as a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintain a kind, Christ-live attitude in dealing with and ministering to people within and outside of Northwestern; and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern’s mission, doctrinal statement, and Declaration of Christian Community.

Must have and be able to continue to hold a valid drivers license
Basic computer proficiency
Commitment to excellence in teaching and academic advising of undergraduate students, including the assessment of student teachers
Commitment to the growth and development of education programs
Commitment to collaborating with department faculty in providing instructional excellence for students
Ability to pass a background check upon hire and periodically throughout the course of employment
