Job Description:
Under the general direction of the Provost, the Dean of the School of Nursing (SON) will oversee the academic and administrative leadership of the school, including such areas as mission alignment, program development, strategic planning, course scheduling, assessment and improvement of curriculum and instruction, faculty recruitment, development and retention, budgeting, and overseeing resource maintenance. The Dean will serve as a strong advocate to enhance the profile, visibility, and effectiveness of the school and the programs housed within it by creating and strengthening partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders as well as accrediting organizations. In addition, the Dean will collaborate as part of the Provost’s Council with the Vice-Provosts as requested in carrying out school and university-wide assignments, policies and initiatives beyond the scope of the School of Nursing.
Duties to Include:
Encourage a culture of discipleship and faith expression within the school that supports and advances PLNU’s core commitment to be a vital Christian learning community.
Foster an environment of excellence and innovation in academic teaching, research, and intellectual achievement of the faculty.
Exercise management responsibility for academic program planning, faculty matters, and administration, including staffing, budgets, and facilities.
Oversee current academic programs housed in the school, ensure they maintain high quality and relevance, and develop new and vibrant programs in related disciplines in consultation with the Strategic Enrollment Planning Committee.
Develop long-range and short-range strategic plans to ensure and advance the strategic priorities and mission of the school and university.
Provide the vision and leadership for interprofessional education to foster a collaborative learning environment among faculty and students within the various programs.
Support academic programs through monitoring of annual program metrics, yearly and periodic assessment and review to ensure regional and discipline-specific accreditation success.
Encourage interdisciplinary engagements within the school and between the other academic units at the university
Enhance the University and school profile with university partners to increase PLNU’s reputation within and contribution to the community and region.
Collaborate with Enrollment and Marketing to promote the school's academic programs and ensure their success.
Partner with Advancement on specific fundraising project projects, building and cultivating alumni networks, and identifying grants and resources for investigation.
Administer the school’s budgets and oversee the effective use of university resources with positive and annually increasing contribution margins delivered for the school overall.
Partner with appropriate university/faculty committees in a timely manner to facilitate and support their shared governance work
Partner with Educational Effectiveness (EAC, Career Services, etc).
Establish a communication network so that student feedback about significant issues and problems in academic departments proceeds according to university policies.
Serve as the mediator in resolving problems arising among faculty and their department chairs or program coordinators, faculty and staff, or faculty, staff and students.
Ensure that faculty and student grievances are processed and appealed in a timely manner, according to university policy and procedures.
Recruit and ensure the orientation of new faculty members.
Work with associate deans to encourage faculty development and professional improvement.
Oversee the faculty evaluation process for the college.
Recommend continuation of faculty contracts to the Provost.
Oversee and suggest improvements to the physical learning environment for students.
Carry out university policies, as outlined by the President and Provost, and from the PLNU Faculty Handbook and Dean’s Guidelines.
Specific SON Duties include:
Support the vision and mission of the SON.
Communicate and advocate for the needs of the School of Nursing with other departments, schools and members of the campus community.
Oversee the management of all departmental supplies and equipment (e.g. durable medical equipment, technology) including the learning environment within the SON.
Foster relationships with all clinical agencies affiliated with the School of Nursing, troubleshooting issues as needed.
Assure program-specific student placement in appropriate clinical agencies.
Collaborate with the Nursing Advisory Board members at least annually (February-March time frame).
Represent the SON and PLNU needs in regional, state, and national communities of interest.
Qualifications:
CA Registered nurse (RN) license required, or a valid RN license from another state and in process of acquiring CA RN licensure.
Doctoral degree required.
At least one (1) year experience as an administrator with validated performance of administrative responsibilities and demonstration of successful developmental leadership.
At least one (1) year continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience in direct patient care as a registered nurse; or equivalent experience and/or education.
At least two (2) years experience teaching in pre- or post-licensure registered nursing programs with a distinguished record of achievement as a teacher-scholar.
Understanding and appreciation for the Wesleyan tradition and theological commitments of the Church of the Nazarene.
Commitment to the Christian Mission and purpose of PLNU, specifically the integration of faith and learning in high-quality academic programs.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with particular attention to the ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse Christian campus community.
Evidence of Christian commitment and active church involvement. In addition, faculty agree to live in agreement with PLNU’s Community Life Covenant.
Desired/Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with multiple modes of content delivery and knowledge of the best pedagogical practices associated with each.
Experience with both traditional and adult learners.
Experience with recruitment strategies to ensure a diverse student and faculty population.
Experience with program review, accreditation and assessment activities.
A record of fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
