Summary: Montreat College seeks an assistant professor with experience in the broad field of outdoor recreation, environmental education, and/or adventure leadership. This is a full-time faculty position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The candidate will be responsible for teaching a variety of courses in outdoor recreation studies (ORS) based on the specific skills and experiences that they bring to the program, including, but not limited to, topics such as history and philosophy of ORS, leadership, group dynamics, facilitation and interpretation, outdoor living skills, current issues, and expedition management. There also may be opportunities to teach outdoor skills classes including backpacking, canoeing, rock climbing, and others. We seek candidates whose classroom teaching and scholarly activities employ experiential-based methodologies. The ORS program provides opportunities for students to specialize in adventure education and leadership, conservation law enforcement, outdoor ministry and environmental education and interpretation. Additional responsibilities include advising students/interns, participating on faculty committees, continuous improvement of curriculum, collaborating with external partners, and other duties as described in the Faculty Handbook.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have training and/or experience as facilitator and educator in the broad outdoor recreation field, including Leave No Trace principles and training in specific outdoor/backcountry skills. The successful candidate will also demonstrate support for Christian liberal arts education and the specific ability to integrate faith into the ORS coursework in a compelling, thoughtful manner.
Teaching excellence and a willingness to serve the broader college community through service and committee work are also expected.
Education/Experience:
An earned doctorate in outdoor education/leadership/recreation/leisure studies, or closely related field, is preferred, master’s degree required. Teaching experience at the college level is desirable.
