Belhaven University, a Christian university committed to the ministry of integrating faith and learning, is searching for the ideal candidate for Assistant Professor of Biology (Field Biology) who has a heart for students as well as a heart for Christ Jesus at the Jackson, Mississippi campus to begin August 2023 or January 2024.
Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses supporting both general education and biology majors (e.g., general biology, ecology, botany, zoology, microbiology, and invertebrate, fish, reptile, mammal, and bird biology); and developing an undergraduate research program, student advising and mentoring, and committee work as appropriate. All courses should be taught with an ability to relate them to modern molecular and cellular techniques and applications as well as the broader physical and technical sciences. These would include a knowledge of global information systems and data science, geology, and atmospheric science. This position is a tenure-track, nine-month appointment with opportunities for summer teaching and research.
A Ph.D. in Biology, Zoology, Botany, Microbial Ecology, Conservation Biology, or closely related discipline is required. The candidate should be skilled and knowledgeable in modern cellular and molecular applications and techniques as they apply to the wide field of Biology. Postdoctoral experience is preferred but not required. The candidate should have a record of academic and scholarly activities. Area of research interest is open, but preference will be given to those whose scholarly activity is most likely to stimulate undergraduate research in Ecology, Field Biology, or related area. Preference given to applicants with peer-reviewed publications, experience supervising undergraduate research, and teaching experience.
Belhaven holds to biblical creationism but allows for a diversity of interpretations of the creation account held among evangelical scholars who subscribe to the inerrancy of Scripture.
This is an Assistant Professor position with a renewable contract for the academic year beginning Fall 2023 or Spring 2024. Compensation and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience. The University supplements major medical insurance. A 403b retirement plan is available for eligible employees to contribute pre-tax dollars with Belhaven University matching up to 8% of annual salary.
