The University of Northwestern – St. Paul, Minnesota, seeks an engaging teacher and emerging scholar who possess a strong commitment to lead a developing undergraduate animation and illustration program, including teaching animation, illustration, storyboarding, character design, CG production, 3D modeling, motion design, and other art courses according to the candidate’s specialty. The ideal candidate desires to inspire and teach animation students how to combine creative concepts with imagination and technical skill to craft effective visual narratives, possessing a record of excellence in creative practice and industry experience.
This position is full-time, promotable, and eligible for extended contract. Ideal start date is beginning January 6, 2023, or August 15, 2023. The Department of Art & Design offers undergraduate majors in Animation & Illustration, Graphic Design, and Art. The related Department of Communication offers a major in Media Production with a Film & Video track and presents an annual student film festival that routinely draws over 1,000 attendees.
Responsible to provide excellence in teaching through the fulfillment of the mission and strategic goals of the Department of Art & Design.
Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Responsible to lead the Animation & Illustration major including implementing the curriculum, staying current in the field, and meeting student learning outcomes.
Teach a range of courses that may include but are not limited to animation, illustration, storyboarding, character design, CG production, 3D modeling, motion design, and other art courses.
Place and supervise student internships within the field, cultivating relationships with industry professionals.
Advise and mentor Department of Art & Design majors.
Engage students in office hours.
Serve on University committees.
Contribute to department/faculty meetings and attend convocations and commencements.
Stay active in professional organizations to maintain disciplinary expertise.
Work with assessment to measure the efficacy of the Animation & Illustration major according to program outcomes and national standards.

Minimum Education and Experience:
An earned MFA or other terminal degree in Animation, Digital Media Arts, Digital Arts, Media Arts, or a closely-related field.
Demonstrated application in cutting-edge industry mediums, for example, 3D modeling, animation, motion graphics, visual effects, gaming, AR, VR, UX, creative coding, or app development.
Evidence of sustained professional activity in animation.
Awareness of emerging technologies and experimental media, especially as they influence contemporary animation practice.
Understanding of digital asset management.
Active member of a professional community of creatives.
Experience teaching classes or groups of students is preferred.
Experience using a learning management system such as Moodle, Blackboard, or Canvas is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Commitment to excellence in teaching of undergraduates
Ability to present the history of the moving image in the context of a broad engagement with film, fine art, and media studies and supportive of experimentation in a variety of media, production methods, and narrative structures
Ability to integrate Christian worldview into classroom instruction
Ability to interact with a variety of individuals in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively within and across departments
Ability to maintain a flexible schedule
Knowledge and understanding of discipline-specific computer software
Ability to type efficiently and accurately and use email to carry out job responsibilities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Understanding of, and agreement with, Northwestern’s Declaration of Christian Community and Doctrinal Statement
Ability to pass a background check upon hire and periodically throughout the course of employment
