The Department of Language and Literature

The Department of Language and Literature at Northwest Nazarene University offers Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and in Chinese Studies; a Co-Major in Creative Writing; and minors in Chinese Studies, Literature, Professional Writing, and Spanish.  The Department also educates English Secondary Education and English Middle-Level Endorsement majors through our nationally-recognized Education Department, whose graduates are highly sought after for teaching positions across the Pacific Northwest.

Description of Position

The Department of Language and Literature at Northwest Nazarene University seeks qualified candidates for a full-time, tenure-track position in English to begin August 2022.  

Essential Functions                      

• Teaching 24 credits per year, four courses per semester, particularly first-year composition and two creative writing courses per year, as well as upper-division writing courses and literature courses as determined by faculty expertise and department need.
• Scholarship as described by the Boyer Model, which may include, but is not limited to, conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications, including creative writing publications.
• Mentoring and advising undergraduate students.
• Serving on assigned university committees.
• Assisting with the development and assessment of the writing program.
• Developing, planning, and conducting an annual writing workshop.
• Advising a campus creative writing club
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The preferred candidate will be trained in composition theory and the pedagogy of composition.  They will hold a Ph. D. in English or a related discipline, or, alternatively, have significant creative writing publications with an MFA.  The preferred candidate will also have demonstrated excellence in teaching first-year and advanced composition courses.
