Higher Ed Administrative Careers - Business/Financial Management
Founded in 1839 by the Associate Reformed Presbyterian (ARP) Church, Erskine College was the first four-year church-related college in South Carolina. Today, Erskine remains authentically Christian and academically challenging, offering students a residential liberal arts undergraduate college experience and graduate-level seminary. All that Erskine has to offer is contained in the welcoming, serene academic village of Due West, South Carolina, on a breathtakingly beautiful campus. Finally, Erskine is strongly committed to Christian higher education in which faith informs reason, striving for the integration of faith and learning in the classroom.
The Erskine College and Theological Seminary VP of Operations and Planning is responsible for all aspects of the operations of the physical campus and planning for the entire institution. As a strategic leader and member of the president’s cabinet, the VP of Operations and Planning guides the institution’s daily operations and fosters a cohesive leadership team across IT, security, HR, bookstore, mailroom, print shop, facilities/maintenance, groundskeeping, and food services. Additionally, the VP of Operations and Planning leads the institution’s strategic planning, campus master plan, auxiliary revenue efforts, external-facing (i.e., corporate and government) relationships, and strategic expansion plans. In all of these efforts, the VP of Operations and Planning reflects the institution’s longstanding mission of commitment to Christian higher education.
The VP of Operations and Planning reports to the President, the institution’s chief executive officer, and serves as the leader managing campus operations, auxiliary revenue, and expanding the reach of Erskine. The VP of Operations and Planning is also a significant spokesperson and advocate for Erskine’s commitment to its mission “to glorify God as a Christian academic community where students are equipped to flourish as whole persons for lives of service through the pursuit of undergraduate liberal arts and graduate theological education.“ The VP of Operations and Planning is a pivotal contributor to Erskine’s strategic planning, budgeting, and assessment processes and functions as the institution’s lead strategic planner. Finally, the VP of Operations and Planning fulfills a critical role of connecting the institution to corporate, government, like-minded evangelical organizations, and the Charter Institute at Erskine.
MAJOR DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
Leader of Operations. Provides overall direction and leadership of the institution’s physical operations - HR, IT, security, facilities, maintenance, bookstore, mailroom, print shop, and food services - with an eye toward excellence and in keeping with the Christian mission of the institution.
Senior Advisor to the President. Provides senior leadership, advice, and counsel regarding strategic plans, initiatives, and direction that work to ensure missional fidelity, financial stewardship, educational excellence, and expanding the reach of Erskine. Integrates operational priorities into Erskine's long-range vision and strategic plan; represents Erskine in external matters that support the institution’s mission.
Senior Leadership. Develops a strong, cohesive leadership team for the distinct functions of operations and planning. Works with all members of the President’s cabinet, promotes organizational efficiency, business process effectiveness, and the development of optimal policies and procedures.
Mission Leadership. Understands and embraces Erskine’s Christian-focused mission and core values.
Operational Excellence. Advocates for and oversees a significant portion of the institution’s non-financial operations. Ensures the efficient and high-quality operations of the institution’s IT, information services, and online learning technology. Strives to ensure Erskine has exceptional security and campus safety, which is closely aligned with the police of Due West.
Campus Experience. Manages facilities, maintenance, and groundskeeping to ensure Erskine has a welcoming and safe campus. Interface and work directly with athletics, advancement, enrollment, and student development to ensure smooth “game-day” operations of campus events.
Budgeting and Resources. Establishes and manages most of the institution’s operational-oriented priorities for budgeting, resource projections, and analysis in support of the mission and priorities of Erskine.
External Relations. Serves as spokesperson and liaison for the college with numerous corporate, government, and other evangelical organizations. Work closely with the Charter Institute at Erskine to enhance the expansion efforts of Erskine via this strategic relationship. Be able to represent the institution in nearly all external matters that support the institution’s public purposes. Partners with the Office of Advancement to ensure coordination between fundraising efforts and strategic relationships.
Performs related duties as necessary to support the college’s mission and as assigned by the President.
An earned degree in any academic discipline.
Significant record of administrative and academic leadership in higher education.
Demonstrated experience with higher education campus operations to include IT, security, facilities, maintenance, groundskeeping, and dining services.
Business acumen with an understanding of budgeting and operational expense management.
Experience outside higher education and knowledge of the non-profit world is a plus.
Significant record of innovation and developing auxiliary revenue opportunities.
Experience in event planning, construction management, and campus master plan development is a plus
Strong oral, writing, and presentation skills.
A clear vision of the role of a twenty-first-century college.
Proven leadership, communication, budgetary, and management skills in complex organizations.
Proven accomplishments requiring high levels of collaboration and conflict management.
Extensive, current knowledge of American higher education in traditional and nontraditional delivery formats, including virtual learning and other innovative learning models.
An understanding of the need to diversify revenue in higher education.
Commitment to the biblical-worldview perspective of higher education.
