The Senior Director of Career and Leadership Development at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul provides vision, strategic leadership, and overall administration of Career and Leadership Development. The Senior Director supervises the development, implementation, and evaluation of career and leadership opportunities across all venues for students and alumni, along with local and international internships for students. The Senior Director creates innovative and integrated partnerships in collaboration with Academic Affairs, the Alumni Office, Student Life, and Global Programs to support the mission of Career and Leadership Development and the mission of University of Northwestern.
Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Provide visionary and strategic leadership for Career and Leadership Development, and effectively hire, train, and lead department staff to achieve goals related to training, career opportunities, and leadership initiatives.
Confer with Academic Affairs, the Alumni Office, Student Life, and other offices to design and promote career and leadership development initiatives for students and alumni. Oversee, execute, and evaluate these initiatives, communicating assessment results to students, alumni, faculty, other UNW offices, and external partners as appropriate.
Implement innovative methods of delivering career services for students and alumni, including coaching, self-directed educational materials, career curriculum, and use of state of the art technology, including social media venues. Know and apply trends and best practices in career and professional development programming to the creation and delivery of services.
Ensure that information regarding career options, employment trends, and leadership development is current and easily accessible for student and alumni use in making educational and career decisions.
Develop and execute a strategic communication plan regarding Career Development opportunities to consistently inform students, alumni, faculty, other UNW offices, and external partners as appropriate.
Lead strategic partnerships to promote local and international off-campus internships. Oversee strategic development of key relationships with employers offering jobs and internships locally and abroad.
Initiate connections with on- and off-campus organizations that can help to strategically promote equity and diversity in career preparation and leadership initiatives, building connections to increase diversity in career communities.
Initiate and maintain career-related connections with Academic Departments, the Alumni Office, and Student Life; participate in and contribute to committees, meetings, events, and programs to promote and support student success and retention, recruitment, persistence to graduation, and ongoing educational career and leadership development of students and alumni.
Assess needs for professional and leadership programming in partnership with the Deans, Department Chairs/Assistant Deans, and Program Directors/Program Managers of TRAD (traditional) and CGOAL (College of Graduate, Online, & Adult Learning). Collaboratively plan and implement programming that addresses the career development needs of students and alumni. Supervise and participate in presentations on career-related topics through Career Development programs or in collaboration with other Northwestern departments.
Oversee departmental budget, conferring with the Senior Manager of Academic Operations as needed.
Serve on university-wide committees and attend key meetings to better integrate career preparation throughout the institution, include advocacy for equity-minded career preparation and leadership development. Facilitate networking and Career Community efforts, conferring with the Alumni Office as needed.
Regularly evaluate Career Development programs and services for effectiveness and alignment with departmental and university learning outcomes. Gather and analyze data necessary to demonstrate departmental usage and effectiveness that includes data collection, analysis, and reporting.
Ensure departmental observance of standards for professional conduct as set forth by the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS), the National Association of College and Employers (NACE), the National Career Development Association (NCDA), and National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE).

Minimum Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in career development, business, human resources, student development, higher education, or other related discipline required
Minimum of five years’ experience in career and/or leadership related development, coaching, or consulting preferred
Maintain a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; be a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintain a kind, Christ-like attitude in dealing with and ministering to people within and outside of Northwestern; and faithfully uphold and embrace Northwestern’s mission, doctrinal statement, and Declaration of Christian Community
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of career and leadership development theory, student development theory, and advising best practices
Knowledge of job trends, career readiness skills, and employer trends
Exceptional leadership abilities with a collaborative approach
Excellent public relations and networking abilities
Strong interpersonal skills, EQ, and cultural competencies focused on Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI)
Strong commitment to working with a diverse student population
Competence in program development, management, and evaluation
Strong leadership skills; competencies in staff development and supervision
Demonstrated administrative capabilities including management of operations and budgeting
Strong data analysis and evaluative skills; background in measurement and assessment a plus
Understanding of career coaching methods and trends in career services including job search strategies, job market trends, employer relations, career technology, and internship practices
Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively with broad constituencies (students, faculty, staff, alumni, employers)
Superior verbal and written communication skills; effective presentation skills
Strategic and visionary planning
Understanding and appreciation of the crucial role technology plays in delivery of career development
Demonstrated public relations/marketing abilities to be used on behalf of the university as a whole and career development specifically
Ability to pass a background check upon hire and periodically throughout the course of employment
Work Environment: The work environment involves working in a suburban, Christian university, working alongside those with a demonstrated commitment and personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a commitment to the mission and values of the University and an agreement to abide by all University policies.
