Description: This position plans and implements a comprehensive institutional public relations strategy to represent, advocate, build and foster positive relations with the public. This position works primarily with media outlets to promote university programs and events, answers questions and connects with the public to raise awareness and involve the community in the mission and goals of the institution. The position gives leadership to university public relations efforts; supervises public relations personnel; coordinating, managing and maintaining the established software application platform for writing, editing, publishing and promotion. This position is also responsible for developing, managing and editing university publications. Primary duties include developing themes for each issue, coordinating articles and features, layout of the publications and working with the database manager and director of Advancement to assure current data and mailing requirements. The position reports to the marketing director, while regularly interfacing with the university president, vice president for Advancement, faculty and staff. Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications or related field of study
- Five years of progressive financial, creative, editorial and supervisory responsibility
- Experience in developing and managing local, regional and national media relationships
- Experience in news and feature writing, "selling" a story to the media, timing and content of news releases, editing of publications and periodicals, researching and writing special reports, and project management
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills who works well independently and in a team environment
- Strong computer creative application skills and knowledge of social media channels
- Experience in multiple distribution channels of electronic communications
- Preferred: Five to seven years of experience in higher education public relations/marketing; experience in media relations

Essential Functions: - Implement a comprehensive public relations strategy for the university
- Direct and oversee the media relations functions of the university
- Develop strong, informative and effective relationships with northern California media outlets and national outlets where appropriate, so as to raise public awareness and involvement in the mission of the institution
- Direct and manage the dissemination of institutional news, both on and off campus
- Work with events specialist to oversee public relations events and programs that achieve the goals of the institution
- Create, develop, manage and edit institutional publications (e.g. The Gateway and The Transform)
- Manage, develop, implement procedures for quality control and readership surveys
- Create press releases, news features and editorials and campus communications
- Analyze the effectiveness of each program and event and track results achieved
- Act as public relations liaison with development officers and capital campaign initiatives
- Work closely with the Advancement and Enrollment Management departments on matters related to public relations and communications
