Chair, Department of Music & Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Music

Qualifications:  The following qualifications are required in the successful candidate:

• Record of administrative experience, including but not limited to budget management and supervising faculty/staff
• Record of successful teaching, service, and scholarly/creative activity appropriate to the rank of Associate Professor or Professor
• Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills, as well as conflict resolution
• Commitment to shared governance and consensus-building within a university setting
• Experience with and commitment to building community across and with programs, departments, and schools

Education/Experience:  An earned doctorate in one of the Department’s disciplines or a closely related field.  A demonstrable history of successful fundraising, community engagement, and academic program development and experience with NASM and accreditation is preferred.

As the leader of the music unit, the Chair will bring the intellectual capacity, inspiration, and energy required to advance the creative momentum to ensure that the Department’s achievements are broadcast widely and strategically.

The Department of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music with Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts curricular specializations in music education, performance, composition, music industry, and worship leadership. With more than 43,000 square feet of performance, classroom, practice, and studio space, the Department of Music is located in the four-story Vera Lea Rinker Hall. Internal performing opportunities include involvement in a variety of ensembles including Concert Choir, Oratorio Chorus, Symphony, Symphonic Band, Pop Rock Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, String Ensemble, World Music Ensemble, and Opera Workshop.    

Other responsibilities to include:

• Provide effective leadership in facilitating the vision, goals, and objectives of the Department
• Oversee and guide departmental curriculum revisions and initiatives
• Organize and supervise class scheduling and staffing
• Oversee annual program assessment
• Teach courses in accordance with assigned workload requirements in an area of expertise
• Promote professional development and stimulate faculty research
• Prepare annual reports to the accrediting body (NASM) and oversee the decennial assessment document
• Maintain and oversee music scholarship assignments
• Coordinate the work of the Division Coordinators (Instrumental, Keyboard, Voice)
• Support student recruitment, retention, and progression in collaboration with appropriate offices
• In consultation with the Dean, manage financial resources, prepare budget documents, and supervise faculty resources
• Maintain Department governance
• Represent the Department to the Dean, University, and external community
• Promote the interests of the Department, both internally and externally
