University Chaplain/Dean of Christian Formation

Position summary

The University Chaplain is responsible for providing leadership for the ongoing spiritual growth of the University community, specifically through the supervision of the chapel program, pastoral ministry to students and staff, and leading the Office of Christian Formation (OCF) team in execution of broader campus programming. The Chaplain also gives significant input on policies and issues affecting well-being of campus community, and serves as a representative of the university locally, nationally, and internationally as needed.

Role Qualifications:

• Commitment to the Articles of Faith, Mission, and Objectives of the University and ability to clearly articulate a robust Evangelical theology.
• Serve as a visible role model for students by demonstrating an active Christian faith in personal example and in work related responsibilities.
• Strong ability to create good will with staff, faculty, parents, and students; servant attitude.
• Strong leader; goal oriented; ability to confidently make decisions and work collaboratively across University departments and constituencies.

Position Responsibilities: 

• Oversees all-campus chapel program: selects themes and speakers (both external and internal),
• provides up-front leadership and speaks regularly, and leads the Chapel Planning Team.
• Speaks at other campus forums such as retreats, Bible studies, symposiums, question and answer sessions, communion services, classes, etc.
• Serves as supervisor of the Office of Christian Formation team of leaders.
• Monitors OCF budget, and gives guidance in assessing effectiveness of OCF initiatives.
• Counsels students on matters related to their spiritual formation and personal growth.
• Consults with faculty, staff, and student leaders to assist in matters relating to spiritual climate of campus.
• Sets goals, objectives and manages available resources to achieve objectives, without need for frequent follow up.
• Serves as chair of Spiritual Life Committee, regularly assessing the spiritual climate of campus and work for improvement as needs and concerns arise.
• Teaches classes as needed, and serves on various other campus committees.
• Other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience: 

• Strong communications skills, both oral and written, including preaching ability. 
• Growing understanding of a philosophy of ministry and worship, with biblical attention to cultural change and challenge.
• Substantial experience leading and counseling with college-aged young people, both married and single.
