Faculty Careers - English Literature and Composition, Faculty Careers - Other
Samford University’s Howard College of Arts and Sciences invites individuals interested in serving in a Christian university environment to apply for a position as Associate Professor of English, beginning August 2021. Duties for this 9-month, tenure-track position include a 2-2 teaching load in general education and English courses (courses are four credits), as well as active research and service agendas.
The selected candidate will also direct the first-year Communication Arts program in Samford University’s core curriculum. The Communication Arts program consists of a two-course sequence under the oversight of the Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The first course focuses on the foundations of academic and vocational writing and speaking. The second course in the sequence is a theme-based seminar that reinforces these skills with greater complexity in field-specific disciplines. Director duties include (1) hiring and training faculty, developing curricula, and assessing the program; (2) coordinating with other directors in the core curriculum and the director of the Communication Resource Center; and (3) collaborating with departments and programs across the University to promote best practices in writing and communications pedagogy. Administrative assistance is provided for course scheduling, room assignments, and other management logistics.

Qualified candidates will hold a Ph.D. in Composition/Rhetoric or in English from an institution accredited by HLC, MSCHE, NECHE, NWCCU, SACSCOC or WSCUC. The department seeks a teacher and scholar of writing and writing studies. Successful candidates will have demonstrated a record of peer-reviewed scholarship and excellence in teaching, as well as experience leading writing programs or centers. Candidates must be committed to innovative teaching, student mentorship, and collegial collaboration.
