Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) is an intentionally Christian teaching university for traditional age students, graduate students, and working adults who seek opportunities to learn and grow in an academic community of faith. The University seeks a full-time, 9-month, Counselor, for its Counseling department on the Mount Vernon main campus. The position reports to the Director of the Counseling and Wellness Center and is available immediately, upon appointment of a successful candidate. The University pay grade for this position is “E”, with a starting rate of $23.06/hr, which may be adjusted based on qualifications and experience. A full complement of benefits is provided including a health care plan, retirement contributions and tuition assistance, each subject to associated waiting periods. The candidate will also receive generous holidays, and vacation and sick days earned on an accrual basis.
Responsibilities for this position include:
Be qualified to provide individual and group counseling therapy to students
Document individual counseling sessions and maintain all documentation for the length of time stipulated by the State of Ohio
Maintain regular office hours; provide personal counseling to students; be on call for emergencies beyond the regular work day
Study many different types of approaches and resources when needing specialized expertise on different presenting problems regarding developmental and emotional issues
Develop referral sources to be used when presenting problems are beyond the training and expertise of the counselor
Maintain current knowledge of legal and ethical responsibilities pertaining to counseling matters
Network with relevant campus personnel to assist in providing comprehensive care for students in need
Attend professional workshops for further development of counseling knowledge and techniques
Function as a staff member within the Student Life Division
Serve as a resource to faculty, academic support personnel, and student life personnel in the areas of emotional, mental, spiritual, physical, and social wellness
Attend all Counseling staff meetings
Other duties as assigned
Expectations for the successful candidate:
Evangelical Christian statement of faith, experience and mission fit
Master’s degree required; license-eligible in the State of Ohio
Personal Commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning
Passionate commitment to the educational mission of Mount Vernon Nazarene University as a Christian liberal arts University affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene
Strong communication skills, tact, persuasiveness, sensitivity, active listening skills
Ability to work under pressure
Strong commitment to work, confidentiality, and the programs of MVNU
Strong commitment to the philosophies and standards of the Counseling Center
Ability to establish rapport and work effectively with students, staff, faculty, and administrators
Ability to lift 25 pounds
