McCallie is seeking an upper school history teacher capable of teaching world history, including at the AP level. The teacher should have broad liberal arts training, be student-focused, and be an experienced classroom teacher. The teacher will join a strong history department that engages boys through a variety of teaching styles, including project based learning. McCallie’s history department trains its students to understand historical epochs, to engage with and interpret primary sources, to perform significant research and communicate the results of that research, and to make relevant connections about people and cultures.
The teacher will teach four to five sections and will also be involved in the school's extensive afternoon activity program, coaching a sport at a junior varsity or varsity level or involved in one of the many extracurricular activities that McCallie offers. In particular, candidates who have experience either coaching lacrosse or with outdoor programs and activities are encouraged to apply.
Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate:
passion for and experience teaching history and engaging students in the study of history;
an ability to write well;
willingness to work cooperatively within a strong department, within course teams, and along vertical course sequences;
a depth of intellectual inquiry, research, or study that has prepared the candidate to teach world history;
a breadth of liberal arts training (e.g. in English, sociology, philosophy, religion, etc.) and capable of making cross-disciplinary connections;
a deep understanding of McCallie’s mission - including both its commitment to character development and the ideals of honor, truth, and duty and its Christian foundation and Judeo-Christian heritage - and have a desire to live out and serve that mission for the good of McCallie boys.
Applicants must have:
a bachelor’s degree or higher in a field or fields relevant to teaching history;
prior teaching experience.
