Higher Ed Administrative Careers - Grants/Research Administration
The Director of the Office of Research Excellence oversees all aspects of research review, monitoring, training and advocacy for Southern Wesleyan University. The position requires strong experience in administration and supervision of graduate and doctoral-level research (e.g., dissertation), including all aspects of institutional review and monitoring of research proposals involving human subjects, animals, and hazardous chemicals or biological agents. The position involves oversight of all functions of the university’s Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
This position reports directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. This is a full-time, 12-month, salaried, exempt position with faculty status located at the university's main campus in Central, SC. The projected hire date is June 29, 2020.
Specific duties of the position include:
Oversee the operation of the Office of Research Excellence, including safeguarding the welfare of human participants and animal subjects in research, providing prompt feedback to all faculty and student researchers, and facilitating education and campus conversation about ethical research.
Ensure the maintenance of detailed and complete record keeping for research-related training and committee work.
Act as committee chair for the IRB, IACUC, and IBS committees, advising the Provost on committee member assignments, making decisions regarding classification of applications as exempt, expedited or full review, and working collaboratively with committee members to ensure a timely turnaround from the receipt of a viable proposal to notification of a final decision.
Monitor and publicize grant opportunities to appropriate schools and divisions of the university and work collaboratively to advise and spearhead grant writing efforts with the University’s grant coordinator.
Periodically and systematically review research guidelines to ensure compliance with federal regulations.
Must have 3-5 years of related experience in research, IRB processes, project management, or a closely related field. An earned doctorate in a research-related field is required.
Grant writing and coordination experience preferred.
Demonstrated ability in clear, effective communication with diverse constituencies.
SWU is committed to maximizing the use of technology in its daily operations and in achieving its strategic goals; the ideal candidate will be familiar with integrated database management systems, including reporting, and have a high comfort level with web-based, mobile and PC applications including but not limited to the use of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Visual acuity necessary to do editorial work, proof documents, and manage files.
Requires ability to sit for periods of time in an interior office environment. May require infrequent lifting of objects up to 10 pounds, and occasionally items up to 20 pounds.
Travel may be required as a part of this position. There may opportunties for having a flexible work schedule.
