The Department of Game Development in Trinity Western University’s School of the Arts, Media + Culture invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position beginning August 16, 2020. This position will require both games industry experience and academic credentials. The ideal candidate should possess a have a terminal degree—such as a PhD, MFA, or MBA—in a field related to game development, such as game design, character art, animation, music composition, software development, marketing, and so on. Applicants with other degrees and extensive games industry experience will be considered—especially if the applicant is currently pursuing a terminal degree. Having sufficient games industry knowledge and experience to guide student game production is essential. Extensive connections in the games industry is highly desirable, as is the ability to teach courses about a number of different aspects of game development, a developed academic publishing record and/or academic art portfolio, and a track record as an effective instructor.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach in our undergraduate program as well as develop a viable research program by staying active in the games industry. The Game Development Faculty member will teach courses matching the appropriate area of specialization and will supervise interdisciplinary teams of students who will build games in as-realistic-as-possible development projects. The purpose of the program is to prepare thoughtful and well-educated game-makers, but ones who are fully aware of the financial and material constraints of the game production process. This means that the Game Development Faculty member must be comfortable with encouraging an entrepreneurial mindset and ready to help students work creatively within realistic financial, technological, and scheduling limitations. At the same time, as an academic program, the Game Development Faculty member should be committed to developing the artistic and expressive capacity of video games, and equipped to help game development students to inspire change in the world, to look beyond clones of already-popular games, and to stretch the bounds of creativity. As the leader of a faith-based Game Development program, the Game Development Faculty member must display an authentic Christian faith and be ready to help students think through how that impacts their game-making.More information about Trinity Western’s School of the Arts, Media + Culture can be found at https://www.twu.ca/samc.
