Description: Charleston Southern University invites applications for the Dean of the College of Education with an anticipated start date of June 1, 2020. Charleston Southern seeks candidates who are professing Christians, committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship and service. They should support the goals of a strong liberal arts education and be willing to explore with students the integration of faith and learning.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will hold a doctorate or equivalent degree from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines in the College of Education. This could include possible coursework or a degree in educational leadership, or related field, and a distinguished record of academic achievement that resulted in the achievement of the academic rank of tenured full professor or outstanding record of research and scholarly activity at the Associate Professor rank. Three years of successful teaching experience at P-12 level required. Candidates should also have experience teaching at the Masters’ level, or higher, with some experience as a chair or committee member for a Masters’ Thesis. Directing or serving on dissertation committees for the PhD or EdD degree is preferred. The applicant should have at least five years of demonstrated strategic leadership, organizational management experience, and innovative transformation in a higher education academic setting; a broad understanding of the research process across disciplines together with the ability to create an environment that fosters research success and faculty scholarship.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The duties of the Dean include, but are not limited to the following:
Provide the leadership to ensure CSU’s position as a premier preparation provider of high quality teachers, educational leaders, and researchers who effectively meet the diverse needs of the region.
Attract, develop, and retain top-tier faculty and staff through collaborative relationships.
Attract and retain undergraduate and graduate students/candidates in the College of Education through positive recruitment endeavors and by strengthening the educational experiences of all students/candidates.
Actively support, foster, promote and protect unique programs within the College of Education that establish CSU as a niche market with potential for regional, national, and international prominence.
Cultivate and maintain university, district, community, and state partnerships through collaborative leadership and engagement with the ultimate goal of improving the lives of children, families, and communities.
Develop innovative, creative, and efficient methods to work with faculty and staff to respond positively and effectively to state, regional, and national accreditation requirements.
Ensure the long-term financial viability of the College of Education and its programs, including: strengthening existing and diversified revenue streams, strategically leveraging the college’s relationship with public and private partnerships, and capitalizing on fundraising success.
Work cooperatively with university administration to create a sustainable financial platform with variations in state and federal support, changing demographics, an unpredictable political climate, and changes in the delivery system for K-12 education.
