The Assistant Director of Network Services is responsible for designing, maintaining, and supporting the data and phone networks for the IWU main campus and all regional education centers. This position has a strong emphasis on maximizing network uptime and requires the ability to lead the Network Services team. The successful candidate will work closely with other teams within Information Technology and will interact with the university’s faculty and staff.
Reports to the Director of Infrastructure and Enterprise Systems.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field is strongly preferred. Candidates with significant certifications and expertise will also be considered. Candidates must have demonstrated expertise in Network Administration and Management; certifications preferred.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage and monitor network access control as well as network infrastructure including switches, wireless access points and controllers, and wide area networks.
Provide oversight and direction for network technicians and administrators
Engage in proactive monitoring and notifications of all networking systems and pathways. This includes health checks, security monitoring and permission reviews of all systems/components managed.
Maintain a life cycle replacement plan for all networking components
Ensure appropriate segmentation and security for all WAN, LAN, and MPLS services
Ensure all network components are patched according to best practices
Ensure backups of all configurations for infrastructure components
Work with the Data Center teams to ensure connectivity requirements for servers and systems are met
Ensure the telephony systems are securely managed, with a focus on future SIP integration completion
Develop and maintain redundant pathways and systems for both WAN, LAN, and MPLS circuits for local and regional centers
Under the direction of the Director of Infrastructure and Enterprise Systems, ensure data integrity is upheld and maintained to ensure secure transport of all IWU data. This includes ensuring encryption is maintained across all network segmentations
Maintain a secure VPN environment that allows required access while maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of institutional data.
Ensure all required documentation is developed and maintained for networking components, including both physical and logical topology
Working with other members of the UIT community, ensure business continuity and disaster recovery requirements are adhered to and tested routinely
Ensure professional development of Network Services Team
Manage the equipment needs and purchases for phones, headsets, switches, access points, and related items
Negotiate contracts with phone and data providers, vendors, and services providers
Assist team members with maintaining policies for backup with regarding to the impact on network traffic and resources
Working with the Director of Infrastructure and Enterprise Systems to develop and maintain the Network Services budget
Establish and maintain partnerships with vendors, as well as other educational institutions and organizations, related to network services
Monitor system, maintain performance metrics and test network performance regularly and provide recommendation for modifications and improvements
Ensure PCI and regulatory requirements such as HIPPA, are maintained and considered with all design and implementation
Research and evaluate emerging network technologies and strategies
Develop and maintain technology roadmaps for Network Services team
Identify, track and report on key dashboard indicators for effectiveness of network strategies.
Supervises the Network Services team, including Network Administrators, Network Technicians, and infrastructure analyst, as well as student workers employed by Network Services.

Successful candidate should have at least 2 years of experience in leading a networking and telecommunications team.
