Faculty Careers - Communication/Design/Media, Faculty Careers - Other
John Brown University, independent, evangelical and Christian, seeks a full-time faculty member for a two-year appointment in the Communication program with a focal interest and experience in digital journalism and civic engagement. Responsibilities include but are not limited to teaching undergraduate courses in digital journalism and storytelling across platforms and general communication courses, conducting academic research and/or creative productions, serving on university committees, serving local and state communications community, advising and publishing works of student journalists in the university media outlets, training and mentoring storytellers. This position reports to the Chair of the Division of Communication and Fine Arts.
The Department of Communication celebrates the centrality of communication in human life through promoting effective communication across many contexts and through multiple media. Communication majors are well-prepared for effective work in media industries, business, non-profit organizations and ministries that require excellent communication. Strong written, interpersonal, oral, and media production skills are crucial for successful communication professionals. Creative Christian leadership is emphasized to prepare students for careers in both faith-based and secular communication fields. Local, national, and international internship and mission trip opportunities allow participating students to further develop a global perspective. JBU Communication students produce the award-winning student newspaper, The Threefold Advocate, as well as the Eagle Break and The Nesher. Students work with online radio station MyPositiveEdge.com, and at KLRC 90.9 FM, JBU’s professional radio station. Golden Eagle Television Productions offers students the opportunity to produce live video coverage of JBU home basketball games. The department also sponsors speech and debate competition through its award-winning forensics team.
An earned doctorate is preferred, master’s degree required. Appropriate professional experience in digital journalism is essential. Expertise in conceiving, creating, delivering and promoting rich multimedia content for journalistic purposes, for all platforms, and for all types of media outlets, is necessary. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to integrate faith and learning across the curriculum, to connect technology to the enhancement of story experiences for users and viewers of media, and to teach undergraduate courses in long-form and short-form journalism as well as innovative techniques in news production and storytelling. Effective teaching experience in higher education, evidence of scholarly potential, and a commitment to Christian higher education are essential.
