Summary: The President of KCU must be an active member in a Restoration Movement congregation; i.e., Independent Christian Church / Church of Christ. The President provides leadership direction and guidance for all components of the University community. As Chief Executive Officer, the President is charged with immediate responsibility to see that the University is soundly conceived and operated. The President has authority to exercise those directing powers that lie particularly within her/his area of responsibility. Among these powers are the planning and implementation, equitable personnel policies and procedures, the creation of a broad base of participation in decision making, the resolution of conflicts, the establishment of effective control mechanisms, (e.g., budgeting, accounting, purchasing, pricing policies), the effective use of physical resources, and the efficient operation of a communication system which links the various components of the academic community and University’s many constituencies. Essentially, it is the work of the President to plan, to organize, to direct, and to represent.
The President is the sole liaison between the Governing Board and the University. All University personnel report either directly or indirectly to the President. It is the duty of the President to see to it that the standards and procedures in operational use within the University conform to the policy established by the Governing Board and to the standards of sound academic practice.
While all functions of the institution’s organization and administration are the immediate responsibility of the President, it is the ultimate responsibility of the Board of Trustees to see that these functions are performed effectively.
Reporting Relationship:The President reports directly to the Board of Trustees.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: As the Chief Executive Officer of the University, the President has the following responsibilities and authorities:
Shares responsibility with the Board of Trustees in defining and articulating the Mission Statement of the University, and assures the development and maintenance of academic programs, student life, and personnel that will promote and support the institutional mission.
Communicate and implement policies of the Governing Board among all appropriate internal constituencies.
Represent the faculty, staff, and/or other administrative personnel by properly presenting their majority views, including dissenting views, as they relate to policies in those areas and on those issues where policy development or procedure is a shared responsibility with the Governing Board and the administration.
Represent the University as its spokesperson to the various publics to which it addresses itself, and provide such information as may be necessary to assure clear understanding of the state of the institution and its mission.
Arrange for the preparation of necessary reports to the Board of Trustees. Develop and implement reporting procedures which insure that the information provided to the Board of Trustees is accurate and adequately informs Board Members, allowing them to make appropriate decisions regarding the University’s management and operation.
Establish and maintain policies that will facilitate informed decision making with regard to University personnel, including salary administration, management, and departmental performance objectives which will assure solidarity in the attainment of departmental and institutional goals. Ensure that all faculty, staff, and administration positions are filled with qualified individuals for both present and future needs.
Maintain control of the annual budgeting, long-term capital budgeting, master campus site planning, strategic planning, and academic planning processes. Develop and maintain planning policies and procedures that promote fiscal accountability and responsibility, as well as, resource management and control. Promote coordination and integration with the University’s planning structure. Submit planning and budgeting documents to the Board of Trustees for advanced approval and periodic review.
Establish and review tuition, room and board, and general student fee pricing policies insuring fiscal soundness and adequate cash flows.
Establish, maintain, and monitor policies and procedures that maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the University’s institutional advancement functions, including public relations and outreach, student recruitment and retention, alumni relations, and the maintenance and development of financial resources.
Provide leadership for the University by serving as an ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees and its committees.
Ensure that the University complies with all applicable criteria of the accrediting associations in which it holds membership, as well as, all legal requirements imposed by state and federal regulatory agencies.
Represent the University and provide leadership within the larger academic community, (e.g., accrediting associations, councils of colleges, conferences), and among professional and brotherhood organizations. Encourage other members of the administrative team to do likewise, to the extent that such involvement does not impair the important day-to-day operations of the University.
Provide leadership in developing, supporting and maintaining the University’s international relationships and programs. The President will demonstrate the University’s commitment to the globalization of education through her/his personal involvement in these relationships and programs and articulate that commitment effectively and often to the University’s constituents through its publications and other public presentations.
Establish and monitor the University’s internal committee structure. Appoint (or cause to be appointed) committees of the faculty, and serve as an ex-officio member on all standing committees of the faculty. Serve as the Chief Disciplinary Officer with sole authority to dismiss or suspend students for reasons of misconduct on the recommendation of the Dean of Student Life and the approval of the Vice President of Enrollment Management.
Arrange the following: Baccalaureate and Commencement programs, Convocation program, and chapel speakers.
Maintain and comply with all policies, rules, and regulations included in the KCU Administrative Handbook.
Carry out such other duties as may be assigned or requested by the Board of Trustees.
Authorities of the President:
Authorities of the President are outlined in various policies included in the KCU Administrative Handbook.
Appoint, supervise, coordinate, assign activities, and evaluate the performance of all individuals directly reporting to the President. Included in this group are the Chief Operations Officer, a.k.a. Executive Vice President, the Chief Academic Officer, a.k.a. Vice President of Academic Affairs, and the Chancellor.
Hold all units of the institution accountable in the timely and efficient performance of administrative responsibilities relating to the University as a whole.
Make recommendations to the Board of Trustees.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Individuals must possess these skills, knowledge, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rates, percentages, and ratios.
Ability to read and comprehend detailed instructions, correspondence, memos, budget reports, audit reports, state licensing forms, evaluation forms and assessments, general business journals, professional journals, technical procedures, and various governmental information reporting forms and papers.
Ability to clearly write complex correspondence, memos, and reports.
Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small or large group situations, both personally and over the telephone.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to define problems, evaluate, and make independent decisions based on experience or knowledge with supervision.
Ability to use computer technology at an elementary to intermediate level.
Sufficient manual dexterity in at least one hand to be able to operate all electronic and computer equipment (keyboards, calculators, printers, etc.), and manually complete paperwork such as signing completed reports.
Ability to listen and hear faculty, staff, and administrators speak about the University activities.
Ability to sit and/or stand and continuously perform essential job functions for a nine (9) hour day, with an hour lunch break.
Ability to grasp and lift or otherwise move goods weighing up to 10 pounds. At times, folders and other records must be filed.
Ability to learn and perform all essential job functions accurately with minimal direct supervision, within three (3) months after employee begins work.
Ability to operate an automobile and to travel by commercial transport, including domestic and international air travel.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
Other Ergonomic Requirements: Current institutional operations and building designs ordinarily require the individual to reach, bend, lift, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, and perform similar physical functions while doing the work of President (e.g. looking for files, carrying files and other reports, and loading paper into printer). All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without a significant risk of injury, or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.
Education: A doctoral degree (minimum) in higher education administration or a discipline related to one of the educational programs offered by the University; or prior experience as an effective president/CEO of a higher education institution or other faith-based organization.
Experience: At least five (5) years of experience as an efficient and effective educator and/or administrator.
Values: The President must be sympathetic with the mission and purpose of Kentucky Christian University and enthusiastically support the University’s core values. The President must be a self-starter who inspires excellence in others by her/his own work ethic. The President must accept ownership of her/his area of responsibility and provide leadership throughout the University community.
