Position Title: Dean of the Beeson School of Practical Theology

Hours: Minimum of 40 per week
The BSPT’s mission as one of the five schools of the Seminary, within the priorities as stated in the Seminary’s 2023 Strategic Plan, is to assist Asbury Theological Seminary in becoming a benchmark, global resource for practical theological studies and experiences. These curricular and co-curricular initiatives contribute to the preparation of “theologically educated, sanctified, Spirit-filled men and women to evangelize and to spread scriptural holiness throughout the world.”
The Dean of the Beeson School of Practical Theology (BSPT) stewards the vision and mission of Asbury Seminary through the faculty, staff, and students of the BSPT.
The Dean provides leadership and administrative oversight for the Beeson Center, BSPT academic programs, faculty development, and the academic organization of the School. Current BSPT activities include:
Several applied master’s degrees in areas including Leadership, Counseling, and Ministry
Courses in Christian Discipleship, Preaching, and Worship
The Doctor of Ministry degree
Counseling and Pastoral Care, including the KY Counseling Center
Asbury Institutes (Continuing Education, formerly referred to as Lifelong Learning) – Housed in the Beeson Center
The Office of Faith, Work & Economics – Housed in the Beeson Center
The Lilly Endowment funded Thriving in Ministry initiative (that focuses on assisting clergy in their early years of service) – housed in the Beeson Center.
Integrate the activities of the Beeson School of Practical Theology with the Seminary’s overall objectives and strategic planning processes (including course scheduling and allocation of faculty resources as well as program assessment and development).
Collaborate with other schools within the Seminary on strategic enrollment management planning and Seedbed/New Room initiatives (especially relative to leadership and preaching, networking, conferencing, and certificates/workshops/institutes).
Oversee the budgets of the various initiatives in partnership with the Provost and Vice President for Finance and Administration.
Extend the Seminary’s presence and influence as a partner with pastors and laity in making the kingdom of God visible by:
Continually assessing the current and emerging global needs of the Church
Designing and executing programs that address the technical, cultural, and adaptive challenges clergy and laity face
Creating networks of alumni/ae and friends to assist peer learning and encouragement
Providing multiple delivery systems for sharing the Seminary’s resources (e.g., seminary courses, webinars, social networking, etc., both on campus and regionally).
Ultimate oversight of the master’s degrees and the DMIN program to ensure quality control, effectiveness, and financial return on investment (with possible assistance of an Assistant or Associate Dean—to be determined).
Faculty recruitment, supervision and development for teaching, and learning excellence.
Oversight of meeting both enrollment as well as participation goals for the School’s various programs.
If qualified and approved, participate as a member of the Seminary faculty, with teaching load to be determined.
Build collaboration within the Seminary with deans, cabinet, faculty, staff, and students.
Represent the BSPT on the Academic Council along with the Associate Dean for BSPT Faculty.
Serve ex-officio on faculty committees as determined annually in consultation with the Provost.
Pursue a seamless integration of preaching and leadership across BSPT.
Explore and make recommendations concerning how selected classes and/or subject areas might synergize with Beeson Center initiatives, including Institutes, and contribute to missional and fiscal vibrancy.
Oversee and make recommendations concerning the economic viability of BSPT activities and programs.
Other roles and duties as assigned by the Provost.
Oversight of endowment income designated for purposes that support the activities of the School.
Oversight of grants and similar funds to ensure fulfillment of the grant intent.
Oversight of the BSPT budget
Managing speaker and consulting contracts in collaboration with the Provost and VP of Finance and Administration.
Direct Supervision & Project/Team Leadership or Training:
Supervise the Associate Dean(s).
Development of BSPT’s faculty and staff in support of their contributions to the Seminary mission.
Serve the research and development functions of the Seminary as appropriate.
