The Aviation Department at San Diego Christian prepares men and women to serve the Lord as professional aviators in missionary, military, commercial, unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and in aviation management. Through seamless integration of faith, academics and flight training, students complete their certificates and ratings in an accelerated program allowing them to begin their professional aviation career while completing degree requirements.
The Director of Aviation serves as the Chair of the Aviation undergraduate degree program, maintains compliance with FAR Part 141 requirements and FAA regulations and supervises the SDC flight team. This position serves as an ambassador of SDC and is a critical liaison to external partners.
Academic Responsibilities (50%)
Serve as full-time faculty carrying workload with courses as well as administrative responsibilities as department Chair
Perform annual safety review of aviation program procedures, policies and operating standards
Assist in planning for and monitoring the costs associated with the aviation program
Work with the Career Development Office to maintain career advancement and job placement programs for graduates
Maintain Emergency Contact list and strategic plan for immediate accident response
Review aviation-specific insurance coverage annually for adequate protection
Enrollment and Retention Responsibilities (20%)
Collaborate with Enrollment Management for recruitment efforts
Co-curricular Responsibilities (10%)
Monitor student flight scheduling and logbooks for currency and progress
Recruit and supervise coaches for the SDCC Flight Team
Identify and recruit students to participate on the SDCC Flight Team
Secure outside funding to support the SDCC Flight Team
Serve as the SDCC liaison with National Intercollegiate Flying Association
Supervisory duties to include (20%):
Delegates tasks and provides effective direction to team members to produce substantial academic and business results.
Recruitment, selection and supervision of flight and ground instructors.
Screens applications, interviews candidates and recommends individuals for hiring.
Trains and assigns work to new and continuing employees
Independently conducts frequent performance feedback at least quarterly throughout the year, as well as the 90-day and annual performance evaluations.
Makes recommendations for employee incentive awards and salary increases including merits and reclassifications.
In conjunction with HR, determines discipline for direct reports.

Master’s degree in Aviation or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of 7 to 10 years’ experience in field of Aviation or as Chair of Aviation.
Minimum of three to five years teaching experience at the undergraduate level
Experience in teaching both ground and flight instruction.
Experience with academic advising
A strong ministry orientation and contact with missionary aviation agencies desirable.
Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Highly effective interpersonal skills; skilled in tactful diplomacy and conflict resolution.
Outstanding organizational skills.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated skills and techniques to recognize problems and find solutions that uphold SDC’s core values.
Self-motivated and flexible with strong organizational skills and the ability to work well with timelines and short deadlines.
Proven ability to interact in a consistently positive & flexible manner with students, staff, faculty, administration.
Ability to multi-task and effectively prioritize workload with frequent interruptions.
Team player that builds and gives mutual trust and respect.
Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
Strong ability to collaborate.
Ability to stand, walk, reach, see, key, hear, work independently, communicate effectively lift and carry up to 20 lbs (with or without assistance). This position requires long periods of sitting, standing, walking, keying and hand/eye coordination for keyboard data entry and viewing data on a computer monitor.
Must be available to work overtime (nights and weekends) as needed
Travel as needed (25%)
