The Director of Institutional Research and Assessment is responsible for institution-wide systems for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of student experience and performance, academic programs, and other activities that support progress on Strategic Plan Initiatives and Institutional Priorities. The Director is responsible for designing a variety of research projects related to strategic analysis, including preparing reports utilizing standard statistical methods, employing data analytics, providing interpretive narratives to accompany data analysis, identifying and tracking key performance indicators, and guiding the selection of standardized and/or developing local assessment tools and surveys. The Director audits institutional data and serves as the clearinghouse for data used in external reporting, including data gathering in support of accreditation reports.
Develop, support and coordinate University-wide systems of institutional research and assessment in support of the Strategic Plan, Institutional Priorities, and accreditation processes.
Audits institutional data and serves as the clearinghouse for the collection of institutional research used in external reporting.
Identifies and tracks Key Performance Indicators, and develops dashboards for consistent monitoring of key data.
Conducts complex statistical analysis studies including detailed descriptions of statistical methods and provides interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data to guide institutional decision-making.
Supports best practices in outcomes assessment using quantitative and qualitative data for academic programs assessment as well as assessing the effectiveness of student support and operational departments.
Defines and tracks key performance metrics for use in the analysis of the effectiveness of programs and support areas of the University; and partners with academic and administrative units to develop a university vision of data supported decision-making.
Establishes survey policies and procedures; selects, designs and deploys surveys; and guides the collection, analysis, and dissemination of information pertaining to the experience and performance of students, faculty and staff, and academic programs.
Maintains proficiency in practice through continuing professional education provided by professional development conferences and consistent readings in the field of Institutional Research and Assessment.
Responds to specific inquiries from Senior Leadership on the status of trends in specific areas of the institution’s operations.
Serve as project manager and provides administrative oversight and support of institution-wide surveys and tests including IDEA Class Ratings, ETS Proficiency Profile, NSSE, AU Student Satisfaction Survey, etc.
Essential Knowledge and Skills
A terminal degree is preferred; a minimum of a master’s degree is required in the field of Institutional Research, or related areas, such as Computer Science, Statistical Studies, Assessment in Higher Education, and other fields containing major components of study related to quantitative and qualitative research, statistical analysis and database management.
A minimum of three-years of experience in the field of institutional research, higher education assessment, and/or institutional effectiveness. Preference will be given to those with experience in the higher education environment.
Demonstrable expertise in database management, advanced use of spreadsheets, and a thorough knowledge of statistical analysis.
Working knowledge of statistical software packages (e.g., SPSS, SAS, R), graphical software (Excel), database query languages (SQL), as well as visualization and reporting tools (Tableau).
Demonstrates professional standards of confidentiality.
High levels of organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
Works effectively with colleagues and students from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
Demonstrable ability to communicate effectively in oral and written communication, including the ability to analyze and interpret data with clear and meaningful narratives.
Demonstrable knowledge of data analytics and various statistical modeling software such as SAS and SPSS, or other software designed to extract and to manipulate data from various sets of complex datasets that can be utilized in reports.
