Under the supervision of the Dean for Student Engagement the Director provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction for all functions of the Office of Christian Outreach (OCO). Additionally, the Director cultivates a gospel centered philosophy of co-curricular missions, ministry, evangelism, service learning, and leadership development for all students participating in the OCO. The Director serves as a member of Student Development Deans and Directors Team and the Student Engagement Team.
Provide vision and direction for the OCO and student leadership development that incorporates best practices in ministry and service learning in keeping with the purpose, goals, and mission of Wheaton College.
Responsible for hiring, training, evaluating and direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Volunteer Programs, the Assistant Director of Summer Ministries, and the Office Coordinator.
Coordinate, with Student Engagement colleagues, the Student Development’s mission, learning goals, philosophy, policies, procedures, and programs.
Provide vision, leadership development and program advising for the World Christian Fellowship student cabinet; oversee recruitment, training, and event management; advance the promotion and coordination of student participation in the Urbana Student Missions Conference every three years.
Collaborate with the Center for Urban Engagement leadership team in advancing a vision for urban engagement and service learning.
Strengthen the College’s commitment to advance educationally purposeful integration of academic learning with ministry and service opportunities.
Develop strategies, programs, and activities to increase fundraised contributions, in collaboration with the College’s Development Office, that further the ministry of the OCO.
In collaboration with the Assistant Directors, lead the bi-weekly OCO student Cabinet Chair’s meetings, HoneyRock Student Leadership Retreat, and mid-year student cabinet retreats.
Develop ongoing relationships with faculty to advance academic partnerships with summer ministry organizations advised by the Assistant Director of Summer Ministries.
Support the Assistant Director in the interview, selection, and placement of student participants in Student Ministry Partners, Youth Hostel Ministries, and Global Urban Perspectives as well as in the development of educational purposeful training, onsite experience and post-trip debriefing.
Cultivate ongoing relationships with leaders of off-campus missions and parachurch organizations to strengthen OCO student engagement.
Manage, coordinate, and facilitate institutional assessment of student learning outcomes of student leaders and participants.
Actively participate in the Wheaton Evangelism Group, Global and Experiential Learning Advisory Committee, and the Student Development Student Care Network.
Effectively manage the administration of the Office of Christian Outreach department budget.
Accept additional responsibilities as requested by the Dean for Student Engagement.
Master’s degree required.
A minimum of five years of experience in international and urban ministries is preferred.
A clear Biblical Christian commitment to justice, evangelism, compassion, racial reconciliation, unity and diversity, and sexual ethics.
A commitment to the goals and purposes of Christian higher education.
Proven ability to foster college students’ leadership and spiritual development.
Excellent oral, written, interpersonal and group communication skills.
Strong ability to work with culturally diverse people.
The ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
A life that honors the Lord Jesus Christ and is consonant with the Statement of Faith and Community Covenant of Wheaton College.
Ability to meet deadlines and manage stressful situations with flexibility.
An enthusiasm for student work that requires occasional evening and weekend commitments.
Ability to use a variety of computer applications. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, content management, spreadsheets, databases, reporting software, graphic editing software, storyboarding, multimedia, and other appropriate technologies.
