The Resident Director, under the supervision of the Director of Residence Life, is responsible for the coordination and development of the total residence program within his/her living area. S/he is the main facilitator in the planning and implementation of a meaningful residence life experience for students and Resident Advisors. The Resident Director is primarily an educator with a developmental philosophy, committed to helping residential students bridge their academic and interpersonal worlds. Included as responsibilities are: general counseling and guidance, living area programming, committee involvement, adjunct responsibilities and Resident Advisor staff selection, supervision, training and development. The Resident Director, with the Resident Advisors as support staff, intentionally plans a living-learning program that emphasizes the development of community.
Resident Director Responsibilities (Approximately 40 hours* per week)
*This is an administrative position, and at times may require investments above and beyond the aforementioned, approximate time commitment.
1. Leadership of Staff—The Resident Director is responsible to supervise and develop Resident Advisors in the effective fulfillment of their responsibilities. The Resident Director will:
a. Participate in the selection of Resident Advisors. b. Orient staff to expectations, policies and procedures. c. Conduct regularly scheduled individual and staff meetings and one off-campus staff retreat. d. Provide for the professional and personal development and evaluation of staff. e. Assist Director of Residence Life in planning and implementation of Spring Training (Phase 1), Fall Training (Phase 2) and In-Service Training (Phase 3). f. Attend 8 Spring Training sessions in the Spring / Wednesdays from 3:00pm to 4:30pm g. Understand and communicate the rationale for Biola University Community Standards and Residence Hall regulations. h. Support or not openly disagree with University regulations.
2. Involvement with Students—The Resident Director is responsible to create an environment conducive to individual student growth. The Resident Director will:
a. Plan resident hall programming which reflects the Philosophy & Strategic Plan of Residence Life—Our Vision, Mission and Values. b. Develop a familiarity with residents’ individual needs directly or through the RAs. c. Establish visibility, availability, and approachability. d. Dress professionally and appropriately for working with university students. e. Advise and counsel students as requested or needed and make appropriate referrals. f. Confront, counsel, care, and refer student discipline. g. Utilize meal plan provided to periodically eat meals with students and/or faculty and staff. h. Serve in the On-Call Student Care rotation and respond to individual student crises and campus-wide emergencies/major disasters as needed. i. Inform the Associate Dean of Residence Life, the Director of Student Care and his/her direct supervisor as incidents occur and provide the appropriate written and verbal behavioral data relevant to administering guidance and discipline in response to these incidents. j. Maintain appropriate relationships with students; does not enter into social dating relationships with RAs or students in own living area. k. Attend University chapel at least one time per week.
3. Administration—The Resident Director is responsible for maintenance of the residence hall and its functions. The Resident Director will:
a. Manage the use and upkeep of all rooms and services within the residence hall. b. Prepare the hall for the opening of the school year. c. Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the residence hall. d. Communicate custodial and maintenance needs to facilities services personnel and/or housing, and monitor progress. e. Assume direct responsibility for residence hall programming fund. f. Work with the Housing Manager regarding room change, and other housing programs as directed by the Associate Dean of Residence Life. g. Be on-call as RD duty schedule dictates. h. Close hall and prepare mid-year and end of the year reports. i. Maintain regular office hours j. Conduct hall rounds once a week. k. Assist the Director of Residence Life in fulfilling additional responsibilities as directed.
4. Professional Growth—The Resident Director is responsible to participate in professional growth and in-service training opportunities. The Resident Director will:
a. Attend Residence Life staff meetings as directed to participate in Residence Life planning as well as staff development. b. Schedule regular individual meetings with his/her direct supervisor. c. Attend at least one professional conference or event per year. d. Participate in on- and/or off-campus networking. e. Participate in Program Team Responsibilities.

Salary Classification: Full Time, 10 Month Contract (42-44weeks per year) paid over twelve months, plus room and board.

Hiring Range: $3,347.67 per month
Qualifications: M.A. in Student Development or related field preferred. Two years working in a college residential life setting. Must have leadership ability, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution skills, and organizational ability. Holds personal theological beliefs that are in agreement with the Biola Doctrinal Statement. Maintain a lifestyle consistent with sound Christian principles and standards of conduct promulgated by the institution.
