The Student Financial Counselor is primarily responsible for the packaging of institutional and federal need-based aid. The counselor will be expected to learn quickly and be able to explain complex details about financial aid, student accounts, and a wide range of other seminary business processes to current and prospective students. Each counselor must possess a thorough knowledge of institutional and federal policies. Candidates comfortable with ambiguity and who are easily adaptive to changing priorities will be most successful in this position.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Facilitates the administration of the loan programs.
Processes Federal Direct and private education loans
Returns funds for which students are ineligible
Maintains a thorough knowledge of all federal regulations related to the Direct and Plus loan programs
Develops and review policies and procedures in an effort to remain in compliance with federal regulations
Packages aid for all three schools
At the beginning of each awarding cycle, accurately offers scholarships, loans, and federal work study to eligible students
Executes Professional Judgments in all applicable situations
Provides financial aid and student account counseling for prospective and returning students
Provides information regarding all available aid to prospective and current students.
Counsels students regarding loan indebtedness and personal budgeting
Informs students about deferment opportunities for student loans
Advises current students of account payment options
Speaks in front of groups at Prospective Student Days and Evening Visits
Participates in online chat events
Participates in Policy Review Team
Responsible for periodic re-evaluation of policies and updating any written materials
Formulates policies and procedures that ensure efficient systems as they relate to the processing, evaluating, and awarding of financial aid. This is done in coordination with efforts to maintain federal and state compliance, meeting institutional goals regarding enrollment management and recruitment, and serving student needs
Discusses regulatory changes and implementation plans
Creates implementation plans related to Banner upgrades
Edits and/or creates application materials
Designs and maintain comprehensive communication plan that utilizes paper and web tools
Resolves issues related to discrepancy reports
Participates in annual Pre-audit procedure
Completes the monthly direct loan reconciliation process
Completes the weekly loan disbursement verification process
Provides front-desk coverage as needed
Performs other duties as assigned
Participates in professional training events as necessary
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
2+ years of customer service, retail or banking experience
Demonstrated skill in communications and human relations with populations of diverse backgrounds
Demonstrated skill handling escalated situations and distressed individuals, while handling sensitive issues with confidentiality
Skill in dealing courteously, tactfully, and with extreme attention to detail while working with high volumes of contact
Ability to use critical thinking skills to answer a variety of questions and determine the best course of action
Ability to work with confidence, consistent accuracy, and independence once trained
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems as they arise
