JOHN BROWN UNIVERSITY, private, evangelical and Christian, seeks a full-time faculty member of the visual arts beginning July 1, 2018. Responsibilities include teaching foundational core courses in photography including film and darkroom experience, interactive design, and computer graphics. Other teaching responsibilities include courses in web design, graphic design, and cinema depending on the candidates’ skills and academic and professional background. This position also involves responsibility for maintenance of labs and equipment. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to academic advising of students, participation in departmental responsibilities, growth as an artist including regular work on personal projects, exhibitions and competitions, program support and committee service.
The Department of Visual Arts resides within the Division of Communication and Fine Arts and offers courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design, Art & Illustration, Photography, and Digital Cinema. The department includes nine faculty members, over 200 students, three buildings, and many hundreds of graduates employed in professional positions across the globe.
An MFA degree in the visual arts is preferred. Specific skills would include the ability to teach photography and imaging, advanced Photoshop, darkroom, interactive design, and computer graphics. Experience in motion graphics desirable. Professional experience in the visual arts is essential as well as significant and successful experience at the college level in teaching as demonstrated by student achievement and references given. Candidates who have prior teaching experience and a professional resume but who have not yet completed their graduate work will be considered. Effective teaching experience in higher education, evidence of scholarly potential, and a commitment to Christian higher education are essential.
