The Department of Biological Sciences at Olivet Nazarene University is seeking an Assistant Professor of Biology to join our Zoology Program, beginning August 2018. With a single Zoologist, the program has grown significantly from 10 students in 2007 to 76 in 2017. An additional zoologist is needed to support the growth of this rapidly expanding student population.
The Department of Biological Sciences currently has 8 full time faculty, all holding doctoral degrees in various fields of Biology, and serves over 220 undergraduate students majoring in Biology, Zoology and Environmental Science. Undergraduate research is required for all Biology BS majors; research and field experience are required for students majoring in Zoology. Olivet's beautiful campus is situated in Bourbonnais, IL, just 10 minutes from the 4000 acre Kankakee River State Park on the biologically diverse Kankakee River, and within 30 minutes of nearly 40,000 acres of woodland and prairie preserves, containing semi-wild bison herds and nationally renowned conservation and restoration sites (Kankakee Sands and Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie). Our preferred applicant will have a strong background in vertebrate zoology to complement our present invertebrate zoologist. However, competence, experience and mission fit are top priorities. Possible courses could include Vertebrate Natural History, Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, Organismal Biology, Evolutionary Biology, or other offerings in the candidate’s area of expertise.
The preferred candidate will:
Hold a Ph.D. with an emphasis in some area of vertebrate zoology
Demonstrate understanding and intended use of evidence-based pedagogy.
Show commitment to the development of an undergraduate research program in vertebrate zoology.
Be able to mentor students in the integration of the Biological Sciences and Christian faith.
